My visit to Ho Chi Minh City wasn’t planned at all. It slipped perfectly between my trip to Osaka and my upcoming adventure in Bangkok, turning what should have been a basic travel connection into a destination that left a lasting impression. I had always heard about Vietnam being a top foodie destination, but I still ended up surprised.
First Impressions: Organized Chaos in Motion

The city hit me with its energy immediately. Ho Chi Minh City moves fast—powered by a constant flow of scooters that seem to move in every direction at once. At first, the traffic felt chaotic, almost intimidating, like a live-action dance with no choreography. But somehow, everything works. Once you get used to the rhythm, navigating as a pedestrian becomes manageable. The secret is patience and confidence. You simply walk with intention and trust that the scooters will slide around you like water.
Navigating the Visa & Airport Arrival
Before any of that, though, there’s the visa process. Applying online can be a little tricky because the system is incredibly strict about accuracy. Every detail must be correct—your legal name, dates, passport number, photo upload, everything—before submitting. One small mistake can delay approval or force you to start over.
And once you land, brace yourself for the long customs and immigration lines. They move, but very very slowly. The wait can feel heavy after a long flight (90 mins minimum!), but once you step into the city, the reward makes it worth it.
A Food Lover’s Paradise at Every Price Point

The moment I tasted my first bowl of pho, I knew Ho Chi Minh City was about to spoil me. Food here is wildly delicious and shockingly affordable. Street vendors, casual cafés, modern eateries, and traditional restaurants—every stop felt like discovering a new flavor treasure.
I found myself savoring bánh mì sandwiches with their perfect crunch, fresh spring rolls bursting with herbs, and smoky & freshly grilled Vietnamese BBQ. Even random food stalls surprised me with dishes that tasted like they belonged in a culinary magazine spread.
The Coffee Culture You’ll Want to Bring Home

Coffee deserves its own love letter. Vietnamese drip coffee was rich and bold. Coconut coffee was smooth, sweet, and tropical. Egg coffee felt like dessert in a cup. The best part? It’s all incredibly inexpensive, making café-hopping addictively easy.
Coffee shops in Ho Chi Minh City have personality. Some are minimal and clean, others are lush and artsy, but all of them make it tempting to sit and stay a while.
Luxury Meets Everyday Living

Ho Chi Minh City is a blend of contrasts in the best way. You can enjoy a steaming bowl of street pho for a few dollars while standing across from a glowing rooftop bar. Boutique shops, massage spas, and stylish lounges sit right alongside mom-and-pop eateries and humble sidewalk vendors. The balance of luxury and simplicity gives the city its unique charm.
My Two Cents
By the time I left, I felt grateful that I added this detour to my journey. If you ever find yourself with unexpected time in Asia, make the detour. Ho Chi Minh City is chaotic, delicious, budget-friendly, and unforgettable—exactly the kind of place that turns a simple trip into a story worth telling.
