So, picture this: I’m on my way back to the United States after an epic solo adventure, and I find myself in Iceland with a PLAY Airlines 12-hour layover – for the second time! Now, you might be thinking, “Why not just chill at the airport or visit take a drive around.” But let me tell you, what happened next turned this layover into much needed rejuvenation.
Change of Plans
Originally, I had this grand idea of renting a car and embarking on a second epic road trip around the Land of Fire and Ice. But then, I realized something crucial about travel – it’s all about being flexible and embracing the unexpected. So, I decided to cancel my car rental and explore Iceland in a different way.
First things first, I checked into a cozy ABC Hotel near Keflavík Airport. Having a comfy bed, hot shower, and a place to recharge was an absolute game-changer for my layover experience. Trust me; after a month of adventure in Valencia, Spain, a little R&R was exactly what I needed.
Blue Lagoon Bliss
Now, here comes the highlight of my layover: a visit to the world-famous Blue Lagoon. Since it’s only a short drive from the airport, it was a no-brainer. The milky blue waters, surrounded by lava fields, created the most surreal setting for relaxation. I soaked away my travel fatigue, put on a silica mud mask, and chatted with fellow travelers about their journeys – all while floating in this otherworldly oasis.
My Two Cents
As my layover came to an end, I realized that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you don’t plan. Iceland surprised me yet again with its natural beauty, culture, and unforgettable experiences. So, to all you millennials and Gen Z travelers out there, embrace those layovers and unexpected detours. You never know what incredible memories are waiting just beyond the airport gates.
Whether you’re soaking in the Blue Lagoon, savoring Icelandic delicacies, or simply strolling along the coast, make the most of every moment. Travel is about exploring, discovering, and stepping out of your comfort zone, even if it’s just for a few hours on a layover. Cheers to the unexpected, and may your travels always be full of surprises!
