Valencia, Spain
This city was my home for one of my last travel adventures. A coastal town of eastern Spain just a train ride away from Madrid or Barcelona. It seamlessly merges history with modern vibrancy, offering a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary allure. Famous for its stunning City of Arts and Sciences, the Turia Gardens, and the lively Central Market, Valencia is a visual feast for every traveler. I settled in the quaint neighborhood of Russafa in my four story walk up (no I didn’t know until I got there!) Additionally, Valencia is celebrated for its vibrant festivals, including the renowned Las Fallas, where massive sculptures are paraded through the streets before being spectacularly set ablaze, creating an unforgettable experience for locals and visitors alike.
Pro Tip: Since the Eastern 9-5 timezone doesn’t start until 3 PM local time, you out spend time out and still be alert for your full-time gig.
Bali, Indonesia
For some time now, I had Bali on my list. Picture this: you, your laptop, and a view of lush rice terraces stretching as far as the eye can see. Bali isn’t just a tropical paradise; it’s a digital nomad haven. It was everything that I imagined it would be. Although, I was surprised by the lack of cleanliness of their beaches. There is a party meets serene vibe when it comes to Bali. I spent my time outside the typical touristy spots in a bungalow which allowed me some peace especially when it came to working in the evening for my Eastern timezone job. However, with a plethora of coworking spaces like Dojo Bali and Outpost, reliable Wi-Fi, and a culture that embraces a laid-back work-play balance, this Indonesian gem tops the list for digital nomads seeking both productivity and paradise.
Pro Tip: Explore the vibrant local culture during your breaks – from traditional Balinese dance performances to mouthwatering street food, Bali is a feast for the senses.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
This city is always on the top list for digital nomads. In fact it is the #1 destination for digital nomads. Better known as the OG digital nomad hub, Chiang Mai continues to attract remote workers seeking a blend of affordability and cultural richness. Thai city provides a laid-back atmosphere where you can work by day and explore night markets and temples by night nestled in the Northern region of Thailand. It is also a cheap flight away from bustling Bangkok and coastal Phuket. Just remember if you have a Eastern timezone shift you will be working 12 hours ahead, so be prepared to work mostly when the Sun is down.
Pro Tip: Dive into the local food scene – from street pad thai to mango sticky rice, your taste buds are in for a treat.
Lisbon, Portugal
Welcome to Lisbon – the land of where cobblestone streets meet cutting-edge coworking spaces and many many hills. Portugal’s capital has become a hotspot for remote workers seeking a mix of Old World charm and modern amenities. Places like Second Home Lisboa and LACS offer not only reliable Wi-Fi but also a chance to work from centuries-old buildings. Plus, the coffee culture here is a productivity booster in itself! You won’t be alone there as a digital nomad either, the city is known for its expats. I have not traveled there yet, but excited to conquer this city in 2024.
Pro Tip: Don’t miss the iconic tram 28 for a scenic ride through the city’s historic neighborhoods.
Tbilisi, Georgia
Ever thought about working from the crossroads of Europe and Asia? Well, don’t let this lesser known country slip your list. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is an emerging hub for digital nomads seeking affordability and adventure. Your US Dollar will go farther here as it is not known for hoards of tourist like neighboring countries. With coworking spaces and friendly locals, you’ll find a warm welcome in this hidden gem. The unique blend of history, modernity, and jaw-dropping landscapes makes it a must-visit for the adventurous remote worker ready to escape the norm.
Pro Tip: Explore the vibrant arts scene and indulge in the world-renowned Georgian cuisine during your downtime.
Medellín, Colombia
Have you ever had the urge to pick up the local language on your digital nomad adventures? Well Medellín, is the perfect city to do so! Escape the conventional and head to Medellín, a city that boasts eternal springtime weather and a burgeoning digital nomad scene. Spend time in coworking spaces, where in Medellín motto is “work-hard, play-hard” mentality. The welcoming locals, affordable living costs, and a rich cultural scene make this Colombian city an ideal work-from-home destination for the younger generation. Hope to see you there, because Medellín is on my list 2024!
Pro Tip: Take the cable car up to Parque Arví for stunning views of the city nestled in the Andes.
Tokyo, Japan
If you’re craving a work-from-home experience with a side of sushi and cherry blossoms, Tokyo has got you covered. The tech-savvy city seamlessly blends traditional charm with cutting-edge technology, making it a unique destination for remote workers. Coworking spaces offer a productive atmosphere amid the hustle and bustle. Just make sure you research Japan culture before you land. Some things you will be surprised to learn.
Pro Tip: Embrace the serene side of Tokyo by visiting Meiji Shrine and strolling through the beautiful Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
Cape Town, South Africa
For the nature-loving remote worker, Cape Town is a dream come true. The stunning landscapes, diverse culture, and robust digital infrastructure make it an ideal destination. If you decide to work in a coworking space, you can balance work with breathtaking views of Table Mountain. Just remember crime is still something that Cape Town is trying to reduce. Always be aware of your surrounding and make sure you research well what neighborhood you will reside during your stay.
Pro Tip: Take a break from your laptop and explore the Cape Winelands for a taste of world-class South African wines.
